Descartes lived in 1596 – 1650.
It’s more than 400 years ago!
This book might be the oldest book I have ever read.
Descartes is seeking the method to find out the truth.
I learn the simple method and fundamental principles of how to build up academic achievement. Also what I’m interested in is to know how he faced criticism in his journey.
This post is not a book review but more likely a summary that I learned from this book.
I think, therefore I am.
is the most famous word that Descartes left.
He made 4 rules to find out the truth.
I think it’s similar to the rules what I used for solving math problems. I didn’t aware that!
Part II: Principal rules of the Method
The first was not to accept anything as true unless I clearly show it is true.
In other words, we have to carefully avoid quick judgment and prejudice.
The second was to divide each challenging question into as many parts as possible to solve the question.
The third was to guide my thoughts in order.
So it’s starting with the simplest questions and move on to the more difficult ones step by step.
And finally one was to review comprehensively to make sure that nothing was overlooked.
Part III: Morals and Maxims of conducting the Method
The first rule was to obey the laws and customs of my country.
My second rule was to be as firm and decisive as possible in my actions and to obey my opinion consistently regardless of my confidence once I decided.
My third rule was to always strive to overcome myself rather than destiny, and to change my desires rather than the order of the world.
Descartes wanted to show a universal method of learning, the fundamental principles of philosophy which builds foundations of new science and learning, and the perspective and meaning of the quest for nature.
Now we know learning is a great and long journey.
Thank you for reading this post.
