It’s not my game.
I’m not a professional coach but luckily I have a chance to play soccer with my son and sometimes I help my son with his soccer practice.
Before the soccer tournament, I want my son to practice hard to be ready for games but my son sometimes doesn’t have motivation for practice…
“What should I do?”
If your son really likes playing soccer, there is no need to motivate him to do the practice. He can motivate himself because he likes playing soccer.
I can say to my son “I don’t want to help you with your practice if you don’t have motivation. It’s your game, it’s no problem for me if your performance is not good”.
What I want my son to do
I don’t want my son to be a professional soccer player, but I want him to learn a team play through playing soccer with his teammates, experienced the fun of aiming towards common goals, and improved his soccer skills to get confidence by achieving some results. Also, if he could learn his efforts will be rewarded, he could use this experience for other things such as schoolwork.
I shouldn’t forget about the core value and life lessons that I want my son to get from soccer.
The effort will be rewarded
However, the first effort is the tough part till he gets some results. Small results are enough to have a little confidence. For example, his teammates and coaches can praise his skills or do some accurate passes or dribble with skill moves or get a goal in a game.
Once he gets the first result, he gets some confidence and feels further effort make more results. And good circulation will start slowly that continuous effort leads to small results and gets confidence. The result and confidence will grow with effort.
What should I do?
The parent’s job is to help kids to make a routine for continuous effort.
For example, do some agility training together for 10min per day. If we do this training 3 times per week for 3 months we will see hin quicker movement in the practices and games. (If your child is a competitive level player, this is not the case.)

I hope you success.
Let’s learn together.
