This is a useful book to understand what is the smart choice in a soccer game. And we can share our findings with our son or daughter. Here is part of my finding.
Fast is better than slow.
One-touch is faster than two touches.
Moving a ball is faster than dribbling.
In addition to playing speed, decision speed is also important for fast play.
For faster decisions, we have to scan the field to prepare your decision. With the scan, we know the position of our teammates and opponents and space. With that information, we can decide to select a one-touch pass or the space to trap the ball.
It’s slower if we get a ball and then think about our next action.
The Impossible pass
This is the title of the chapter3. I like this naming.
If Jenny had a ball and other teammates called her name to ask for a pass, “JENNY! JENNY! JENNY” is not helpful for her. She knows her name. Hahaha.
It is good information for a ball holder like “Man on”, “Time” to make the decision of next action.
Three questions
What if? What’s next? What’s behind me? These questions will change your soccer life.
I agree with these words that preparation is important for a quick decision. In my case, I always try to think about 2 questions.
During defense, what should I go when our team gets a ball?
During offense, what should I go when our team lost a ball.
Don’t turn into pressure
Soccer is a 360degree sport. Player aren’t obligated to go forward like they are in many other sports.
I saw a forward, with two defenders behind, try to turn and lose the ball. He can choose to trap the ball away from defenders and pass it to a teammate.
We can use backward space to keep the ball.
Turning the corner
This is a critical part for a winger if I threaten the opponents or not. When I go into attacking third, cutting in the center create much more options and opportunity to get a goal.
There are many other clever ideas that are worth knowing.
