Congratulations on your promotion!
I’m writing this post for a new manager.
What do you want to do first?
When you heard about your promotion to be a new manager you may start thinking of what kind of team should I make? It’s a very exciting moment.
You may think about how to utilize your strengths in the team, and also job assignments who should be assigned to which jobs.
By the way, when I was a new manager, I wanted to hold workshops to learn about presentations and negotiations. I wanted to provide the learning opportunities to learn from each other.
No, that’s not what you need to do.
Start with a One-on-one meeting
What you need to do first is to have a one-on-one meeting to understand the team member and your boss as well as the previous manager of the team.
Do what everyone wants you to do, not what you want to do. You may want to provide learning opportunities to your team members because you like learning, but team members may not want it.
What do you talk about in a one-on-one meeting?
The main purpose of a one-on-one meeting is to take communication with each team member to understand their goal and progress as well as strengths/weakness and preference. Also, you need to understand mid-long term challenges you need to work on.
So the agenda could be like this.
- Teams challenges/task
- Mid-long term teams challenges
- Personal goals and progress
- Personal task list
- % of your time on each task
- Favorite task or task you are good at
- Disliked task or the task you are not good at
- Career path
After meetings, you know about the team members and the tasks that you will need to do.
Thank you for reading this post.
I hope this will help new managers.
